Kennedy Schuh is an interdisciplinary artist living in Chicago, IL. Her practice is deeply rooted in philosophies of entanglement. It is primarily concerned with the ways in which beings are related to and connect with one another. These concepts manifest in a body of work that is largely made up by printmaking and sculpture. Through the act of layering in the process of printing through silkscreen and risography, her work explores relationships of influence and collaboration as individual layers come together to create a community of image which is greater than the sum of its parts. Her sculptural practice is made up of stained glass and fibers work. She is drawn to the material of glass for both its fragmentary properties and for its connotations with the sacred. The lines of solder in a stained glass piece make visible the web which connects even the farthest shards of glass to one another. Kennedy works with scrapped pieces of stained glass to create three-dimensional sculptural forms. Using shards to create demonstrates her belief in the potential for renewal and transformation. Additionally, the intentional decision to work with discarded material not only aligns with her work with her environmental concerns but also allows Kennedy’s work to take on a narrative that resonates with themes of responsibility and stewardship. In assembling these disparate pieces into an art work (and really, what is an artwork if not a communion?), the irregular shape of the glass means that the pieces will never fit together perfectly. This results in holes and gaps in the plane of the work. These holes allow the work to breathe. They serve the work’s narrative that embracing imperfections and leaving space fosters growth and resilience.
Kennedy is expected to graduate with her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in December 2024. She has participated in various group shows including A Garden, A Hole, in Chicago, IL, ARTBASH at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago, IL, and Color Splash Art Show by the Palmer Lake Art Group in Palmer Lake, CO.
